Flame Retardant Sheeting Certification
This flame retardant sheeting is LPCB certified to LPS1207 Loss Prevention Standard under certificate number 1792a. The product-specific certificate reference for the orange 4m x 25m x 250-micron roll is 1792a/02.
LPS1207 certification supports projects where insurers, developers, owners or main contractors require flame-retardant temporary protection that complies with LPS1207 and the Joint Code of Practice.
The material has undergone testing for:
| Test property | Test method | Data-sheet result |
|---|---|---|
| Ignitability | BS 476 Part 12 | Pass |
| Smoke emissions | prEN 2824 and prEN 2825 | Pass |
| Toxic gas emissions | prEN 2824 and prEN 2826 | Pass |
| Critical oxygen index | BS 2782 Part 1 | Pass |
The certification applies to the product when used and installed according to the relevant instructions. Consequently, altering the material through unsuitable processes or using it outside the certified conditions may invalidate its certification.
Flame Retardant Does Not Mean Fireproof
Although the material offers certified flame-retardant performance, it is not fireproof. Therefore, it cannot eliminate the risk of fire or replace an appropriate site fire-safety plan.
The sheeting helps reduce fire loading and the risk of ignition compared with unsuitable standard polythene protection. However, users must still follow suitable fire-prevention procedures, workplace controls and project-specific risk assessments.
Do not use the material as a structural fire barrier, permanent fire curtain or replacement for an approved fire-protection system. Furthermore, keep it away from direct flames and temperatures outside its recommended working range.
Centre-Folded Flame Retardant Sheeting
The material opens to a full width of 4m, or approximately 13.12 feet. However, it comes centre-folded down to approximately 2m, or 6.56 feet, on the roll.
This format makes the roll easier to store, carry and position before installation. First, place the roll close to the area requiring protection. Next, unroll the required length while the material remains folded. Then, carefully open the centre fold to reveal the complete 4m width.
The fold does not reduce the product’s full dimensions or coverage. Nevertheless, creases and fold lines may remain visible after opening.
Using Flame Retardant Sheeting for Surface Protection
Construction and refurbishment teams can use flame retardant sheeting to protect floors, walls and installed finishes from airborne dust, general debris and damage caused by following trades.
Modern construction programmes often require contractors to install finished surfaces while other work continues nearby. Therefore, covering these surfaces can help reduce cleaning, repair work and delays before project handover.
Before installation, make sure the surface is smooth and free from sharp protrusions. Exposed fixings, rough edges and loose building materials may puncture or tear the sheet.
Flame Retardant Sheeting for Screening
The large roll format suits temporary screening, hanging and draping applications. For example, users can separate working areas, create temporary internal screens or protect specific zones during construction and refurbishment.
Support the sheeting at appropriate intervals and use fixings suitable for the installation. Additionally, prevent loose material from blocking fire exits, access routes, signs, alarms, sprinklers or other fire-safety equipment.
This product can provide a protective screen, but it does not function as structural guarding, edge protection or a load-bearing barrier.
Installing Flame Retardant Sheeting
Install the material with the printed LPS logo facing upwards or outwards so the certification markings remain visible.
Unroll the sheet and cut it to fit the area requiring protection. Where two sections meet, create a minimum overlap of 75mm, which equals approximately 2.95 inches.
Secure the joints firmly with a suitable single-sided tape. Then press along the complete length of each taped joint to produce a secure connection.
For certified or specification-led work, check whether the project requires a particular compatible tape, fixing system or installation arrangement before beginning.
Cutting and Resizing Flame Retardant Sheeting
The material is easy to cut and resize for protective covers, pallet hoods, temporary enclosures and irregularly shaped areas.
First, measure the required section and include enough material for overlaps and fixing. Next, place the sheet on a safe cutting surface. Then use a suitable safety knife or sheeting cutter.
Avoid cutting directly against finished floors, worktops or other valuable surfaces. Furthermore, keep the material away from sharp corners while positioning it.
Cutting the material to size is permitted for normal installation. However, heat-shrinking is not approved and will invalidate the product’s certification.
Flame Retardant Sheeting for Asbestos Applications
The technical data sheet identifies the 250-micron – 1000-gauge – material as approved for use as an asbestos wrapping film. It may also be suitable for wrapping large asbestos-containing items and for asbestos tent or enclosure applications.
However, asbestos work presents serious health risks and remains subject to strict legal controls. Therefore, only appropriately trained and authorised professionals should select and use the material for asbestos-related work.
The sheeting alone does not create a complete asbestos-containment system. Users must follow the relevant risk assessment, method statement, regulations and disposal procedures. In addition, confirm that the complete enclosure, tape, fixings and working practices meet the requirements of the specific project.
Temperature Range
The recommended working temperature for the flame retardant sheeting is between 5°C and 50°C, which equals approximately 41°F to 122°F.
The typical softening point is above 70°C, or approximately 158°F. Nevertheless, the softening-point figure does not represent a safe continuous working temperature.
Do not place the sheet against hot equipment, heating appliances or surfaces that may exceed the recommended range. Additionally, do not heat the product in an attempt to shrink it around an item.
Indoor Use Only
The LPS1207 certification specifies this product for indoor use only. Therefore, do not rely on the certification for an outdoor installation.
Sunlight, wind, rain and changing temperatures may affect the material and its fixings. Furthermore, the technical information does not confirm long-term UV stability or certified outdoor performance.
Choose a product specifically designed and certified for outdoor use when the project involves external screening or prolonged weather exposure.
Moisture Resistance
The polythene material can help protect suitable surfaces from moisture and light splashes. However, joints, edges, punctures and fixing points may allow water to pass around the protective covering.
Overlapping and taping the sheeting does not automatically create a certified waterproof system. Therefore, assess the complete installation when protecting moisture-sensitive materials or equipment.
Non-breathable polythene can also trap condensation. Accordingly, consider ventilation and make sure covered items are suitably dry before enclosing them for extended periods.
Calculating Flame Retardant Sheeting Requirements
Each complete roll provides a gross coverage area of 100m², or approximately 1,076.39 square feet.
To estimate the quantity required:
- Measure the length and width or height of each area.
- Multiply the measurements to calculate the area.
- Add the separate areas together.
- Include material for the minimum 75mm overlaps.
- Add an allowance for trimming, corners, fixing and potential damage.
- Divide the adjusted total by 100m².
- Round up to the next complete roll.
Complex enclosures, numerous corners and irregular surfaces generally require a larger installation allowance.
Handling Flame Retardant Sheeting
Handle the product in accordance with current manual-handling requirements. Although centre-folding reduces the roll width, the complete roll may remain heavy or awkward to carry.
Position the roll near the installation area before removing all packaging. Additionally, ask for assistance or use suitable handling equipment where necessary.
Avoid dragging the material across rough surfaces because abrasion may damage it before installation.
Storing Flame Retardant Sheeting
Store the roll horizontally in a warm, dry and clean environment. Keep it under cover in its original packaging and away from sunlight.
Furthermore, protect the roll from sharp objects, excessive heat, moisture and contamination. Before installation, inspect the material for punctures, cuts or other damage.
Correct storage helps preserve the material’s condition and keeps the printed certification markings visible.
