Edge Protectors 40mm x 3mm x 1m

Our Edge Protectors provide a practical way to reinforce and protect exposed corners on pallets, cartons and other compatible packaged products.

Each protector has an L-shaped profile with two nominal 40mm sides, equal to approximately 1.57 x 1.57 inches. The cardboard measures approximately 3mm thick, or 0.12 inches, while each length measures 1m, approximately 39.4 inches or 3.28 feet.

We supply the protectors in packs of 50. Therefore, each pack provides a combined length of 50 metres, or approximately 164 feet.

Businesses can position the protectors beneath pallet strapping or stretch wrap to distribute pressure more evenly and protect vulnerable package edges.

Pack of 50 Edge Protectors

Each complete pack contains 50 individual one-metre lengths.

The pack provides enough protectors for several pallets or packaging projects, although the exact number of loads covered will depend on how many lengths each application requires.

For example, placing one complete length on each of four vertical pallet corners would use four protectors. However, additional lengths may be required around top edges, beneath several straps or across particularly vulnerable areas.

The complete pack provides:

  • 50 individual lengths
  • 1 metre per protector
  • Approximately 3.28 feet per protector
  • 50 metres of combined protection
  • Approximately 164 feet of combined protection

40 x 40mm L-Shaped Profile

The L-shaped design fits around compatible carton, pallet and product corners.

Each side of the profile measures approximately 40mm, or 1.57 inches. Consequently, the protector covers part of both adjoining surfaces rather than sitting against only one face.

This design can help:

  • Keep the protector aligned with the corner
  • Spread pressure across two surfaces
  • Protect exposed carton edges
  • Reduce direct contact between strapping and packaging
  • Support a neater wrapped-pallet appearance
  • Align compatible stacked cartons

Check that the corner angle and profile suit the intended product before applying strapping or stretch film.

3mm Cardboard Thickness

The protectors have a nominal cardboard thickness of 3mm, approximately 0.12 inches.

This thickness provides a firm protective layer between the package and any compatible stretch wrap or strapping. However, the protector remains a packaging component rather than a structural support.

Performance will depend on:

  • Product weight
  • Pallet arrangement
  • Strap tension
  • Number of protectors used
  • Length of unsupported edges
  • Handling conditions
  • Exposure to moisture
  • Storage conditions
  • Carton strength
  • Product shape

No specific load-bearing capacity has been provided. Therefore, test the complete packaging arrangement before regular use.

One-Metre Lengths

Each protector measures 1m long, approximately 39.4 inches or 3.28 feet.

The full length can protect many pallet and carton edges without requiring several shorter pieces. Alternatively, users can cut the protector into shorter sections for compatible products.

Measure the required area before cutting because shortened lengths cannot be restored to their original size.

When cutting:

  1. Mark the required length clearly.
  2. Position the protector on a stable cutting surface.
  3. Use a suitable safety cutter or cutting tool.
  4. Keep hands away from the blade.
  5. Cut away from the body.
  6. Check the cut edge before application.
  7. Remove loose cardboard fibres where necessary.

Do not cut the protector while it remains positioned against the product because the blade may damage the contents or packaging beneath it.

Protecting Pallet Corners

Position the protectors vertically along suitable pallet-load corners before applying stretch film or strapping.

To prepare a pallet:

  1. Inspect the pallet for damage.
  2. Stack the cartons evenly.
  3. Keep heavier products towards the bottom.
  4. Align the outer carton edges where possible.
  5. Position a protector along each required corner.
  6. Hold the protectors temporarily in place where necessary.
  7. Apply stretch wrap or strapping evenly.
  8. Check that the protectors remain correctly positioned.
  9. Inspect the complete load before movement.

The protectors do not correct an unstable pallet. Restack or replace damaged packaging before securing the load.

Using Edge Protectors with Pallet Strapping

Pallet strapping can apply concentrated pressure to carton edges. Placing a protector beneath the strap helps spread this force across a wider area.

This can reduce:

  • Strap indentation
  • Crushed carton edges
  • Surface marking
  • Direct strap contact
  • Localised pressure
  • Damage to printed packaging

Place the protector between the strapping and the product before tensioning.

Do not overtighten the strapping. Excessive tension may crush the protector, damage the cartons or distort the complete load.

Use strapping and tools suitable for the product, pallet and expected handling conditions.

Using Edge Protectors with Pallet Wrap

The protectors can also sit beneath clear or black pallet wrap.

Position them against the corners before wrapping the load. Next, apply the stretch film carefully so it holds each protector in position.

The protectors can create straighter outer edges and provide an additional layer between the wrap and the cartons.

However, neither pallet wrap nor cardboard protectors replace suitable load-securing equipment where certified restraint remains necessary.

Horizontal Edge Protection

Although users often position the lengths vertically, they may also place them horizontally along suitable top or bottom edges.

Horizontal application can help protect:

  • Top carton edges
  • Long boxed products
  • Flat-packed items
  • Furniture edges
  • Panels
  • Printed cartons
  • Products secured with horizontal straps

Measure the edge and cut the protector where necessary. Furthermore, support long spans adequately rather than expecting the cardboard protector to carry the product weight.

Protecting Printed Cartons

Strapping and stretch film may mark printed or presentation packaging during transport.

An edge protector creates a barrier between the securing material and the carton. As a result, it may help reduce direct abrasion, indentation and scuffing.

However, always test the material on delicate, high-gloss or easily marked packaging before regular use.

The natural cardboard surface may contain minor variations or loose fibres. Therefore, add another suitable protective layer if the product requires a particularly clean finish.

Edge Protectors for Pallet Stability

Edge protectors can support a neat and organised pallet arrangement by aligning compatible carton corners.

Nevertheless, they do not make an unstable stack safe. The cartons must remain correctly arranged, while the pallet must suit the load.

Before moving a pallet, confirm that:

  • The pallet remains undamaged
  • The cartons sit evenly
  • Heavy goods remain at the bottom
  • Products do not extend unsafely beyond the pallet
  • The protectors remain in position
  • Strapping has suitable tension
  • Stretch wrap covers the required areas
  • Nothing can fall from the load
  • Handling equipment can access the pallet safely

Complete an appropriate load assessment before transport or storage.

Moisture and Storage Conditions

Cardboard edge protectors should remain clean and dry.

Moisture can soften the material, reduce its rigidity and cause the layers to separate or distort. Consequently, do not rely on wet or damaged protectors.

Store unused lengths:

  • Indoors
  • Flat or vertically supported
  • Away from rain
  • Away from condensation
  • Away from direct floor contact
  • Away from excessive heat
  • Away from naked flames
  • Away from strong chemicals
  • Away from oils and grease
  • Away from crushing pressure

Inspect the protectors before every use and remove damaged lengths from service.

Reusing Edge Protectors

The protectors may be suitable for reuse when they remain clean, dry, straight and undamaged.

Before reusing one, check for:

  • Crushing
  • Splitting
  • Delamination
  • Moisture damage
  • Severe bending
  • Contamination
  • Torn edges
  • Previous strap damage
  • Loss of the L-shaped profile

Do not reuse a protector if damage prevents it from fitting or distributing pressure correctly.

Important Limitations for Edge Protectors

These protectors provide packaging-edge protection. They should not be used as:

  • Structural supports
  • Load-bearing beams
  • Pallet repairs
