Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 Without Cutter

Our Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 provides a straightforward method for sealing suitable polythene bags and layflat tubing. It accepts packaging material up to 400mm wide, which equals approximately 15.75 inches.

The 400mm measurement describes the machine’s maximum sealing length rather than its overall physical width. Therefore, the complete section of the bag that requires sealing must fit within the 400mm sealing area.

This model does not include an integrated cutter. Consequently, it works particularly well with pre-made bags, pre-cut tubing or operations that already use a separate cutting tool.

The machine produces a 2mm-wide seal and handles film up to a stated maximum thickness of 2 x 150 microns. However, material composition can affect sealing performance. Therefore, test the complete packaging material before beginning regular production.

The maximum film thickness refers to two layers of film, each measuring up to approximately 150 microns. However, material formulation, coatings, gussets and folds can change the effective sealing thickness.

Accordingly, always test the actual packaging material before production. Do not rely solely on its stated micron or gauge measurement.

What the 400mm Capacity Means

The Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 creates a seal measuring up to 400mm long. Therefore, it can accept a bag or flattened section of tubing measuring no more than 400mm across the sealing line.

Allow enough space to position the material flat across the sealing bar. Creases, folds and trapped products may prevent the machine from forming a consistent seal.

For gusseted bags, remember that folded side panels create additional layers. Consequently, the combined material thickness may exceed the nominal specification even when each individual layer appears suitable.

A bag measuring exactly 400mm wide may also prove more difficult to position than a slightly narrower bag. Therefore, allow a practical margin where possible.

Cutter-Free Impulse Heat Sealer IS400

This model does not contain an integral trimming cutter. As a result, the machine seals the packaging material without cutting away the excess film.

The cutter-free design suits businesses that primarily use:

  • Pre-made polythene bags
  • Bags already cut to length
  • Pre-cut layflat tubing
  • A separate film-cutting station
  • Packaging processes that do not require trimming after every seal

When using continuous layflat tubing, cut the tubing separately with an appropriate safety cutter or cutting system. Always complete the cutting task on a suitable surface and keep cutting tools away from the sealing element and electrical cable.

If your packing process requires the machine to seal and trim film at the same station, consider whether a cutter-equipped model would provide a more convenient workflow.

How the Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 Works

An impulse heat sealer applies a controlled pulse of electrical energy to the heating element when the operator lowers the sealing arm.

The element heats for the selected period and transfers heat through the packaging material. Meanwhile, pressure from the sealing arm brings the two film layers together.

After the heating cycle finishes, hold the arm down briefly. This cooling period allows the seal to set while the machine continues to apply pressure.

Unlike a constantly heated sealer, an impulse model heats its element during the sealing cycle. Nevertheless, the sealing area can remain hot after repeated use. Therefore, operators must avoid touching the element, sealing bar and nearby surfaces.

Setting Up the Impulse Heat Sealer IS400

Place the machine on a clean, dry, stable and heat-resistant work surface. Allow enough room around the equipment for the bags, products and operator.

Before connecting the machine:

  1. Inspect the body, sealing arm and electrical cable.
  2. Check that the sealing element and protective covering remain correctly positioned.
  3. Remove loose packaging, tools and combustible materials from the immediate area.
  4. Confirm that the available electrical supply matches the machine’s rating label.
  5. Position the cable so it cannot create a trip or snagging hazard.
  6. Select a low initial timer setting.
  7. Test the machine using an offcut of the intended packaging material.

Increase the timer gradually until the machine produces a secure seal. Avoid using a higher setting than necessary because excessive heat can melt, distort or cut through the film.

Using the Impulse Heat Sealer IS400

First, fill the bag while leaving enough unused material above the product to create the seal. Next, remove excess air where appropriate and make sure the sealing area remains clean and flat.

Place the open edge across the sealing bar without stretching the film. Then lower the arm firmly and evenly to start the sealing cycle.

Once the heating cycle finishes, keep the arm closed for a short cooling period. Afterwards, raise the arm and remove the bag carefully.

Inspect the seal before packing the next item. If the seal separates easily, increase the timer slightly or extend the cooling period. Conversely, reduce the setting if the film burns, wrinkles, melts excessively or sticks to the sealing area.

Never place fingers, clothing, labels or the packaged product across the sealing line.

Adjusting the Sealing Time

Different film types and thicknesses require different timer settings. Therefore, there is no single setting that will suit every compatible bag or tube.

Thin film usually requires less heat. Meanwhile, thicker material or packaging containing several layers may require a longer sealing cycle.

Begin with a low setting and make small adjustments. After each adjustment, allow the seal to cool and test its strength.

Excessive heat may:

  • Melt through the film
  • Produce brittle seals
  • Cause the material to stick
  • Damage the protective sealing cover
  • Shorten the life of the heating element
  • Create an untidy or distorted seal

Insufficient heat may leave gaps or weak sections. Consequently, careful testing provides better results than immediately selecting a high setting.

Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 for Layflat Tubing

Layflat tubing allows users to create bags in different lengths from one continuous roll. Because this IS400 model does not contain a cutter, users must cut the tubing with a separate suitable tool.

A typical process involves:

  1. Measuring the required bag length.
  2. Cutting the tubing squarely and safely.
  3. Sealing one end of the cut section.
  4. Allowing the first seal to cool.
  5. Filling the newly created bag.
  6. Positioning the open end across the sealing bar.
  7. Completing the second seal.
  8. Inspecting both sealed ends.

Allow additional material for the top and bottom seals when calculating the required bag length. Furthermore, leave enough clearance around the product so that it cannot interfere with the sealing area.

Sealing Pre-Made Bags

The cutter-free Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 works well with compatible pre-made polythene bags because users only need to seal the open edge.

Place the product fully inside the bag and keep it away from the intended sealing line. Then flatten the open section so both layers sit evenly across the sealing bar.

Remove dust, grease, moisture and loose product from the sealing area. Otherwise, contamination may create channels or weak points in the completed seal.

For powders, granules or small components, allow enough unused bag length to prevent the contents from reaching the sealing line during operation.

Testing Completed Seals

Check the finished seal before relying on it for storage, handling or distribution.

A suitable seal should appear reasonably straight and continuous across the full required width. It should not contain obvious gaps, burnt areas, heavy wrinkles or trapped product.

After the seal has cooled, apply gentle pressure to the bag. Then check whether the seal opens, peels or allows air to escape.

For liquid, fine powder, hygiene-sensitive or high-value products, develop a suitable documented testing method. A visual inspection alone may not confirm package integrity.

The machine’s ability to create a seal does not prove that the finished pack is airtight, watertight or suitable for a regulated application.

Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 Productivity

The stated output exceeds 100 seals per shift. However, actual productivity will depend on:

  • Bag size
  • Film thickness
  • Timer setting
  • Required cooling time
  • Product loading speed
  • Operator experience
  • Inspection requirements
  • Material positioning
  • Maintenance condition
  • The overall packing process

The output figure provides a general indication rather than a guaranteed production rate.

For faster repetitive operations, organise bags and products before sealing. Additionally, position the machine at a comfortable working height and keep the packing area clear.

Choosing Suitable Bags and Film

Use the Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 with compatible heat-sealable polythene packaging within the stated width and thickness limits.

Not every plastic film responds to impulse sealing in the same way. Material composition, recycled content, coatings, laminations and surface treatments can all affect the required temperature and sealing result.

Do not assume that the machine will seal every plastic bag. Instead, test the intended material under realistic packing conditions.

When selecting packaging, consider:

  • Bag or tubing width
  • Individual layer thickness
  • Number of layers across the sealing line
  • Gussets and folds
  • Product weight
  • Sharp corners
  • Storage conditions
  • Required barrier properties
  • Transport conditions
  • Food-contact requirements
  • Tamper-evidence requirements

Choose the bag or tubing according to the complete application rather than the machine capacity alone.

Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 Safety Information

Only trained and authorised users should operate the machine. Read the supplied operating instructions before installation, adjustment, cleaning or maintenance.

Keep hands away from the sealing element and hot surfaces. In addition, tie back long hair and prevent loose clothing, jewellery or lanyards from approaching the sealing arm.

Always use the machine in a clean, dry and well-lit area. Do not operate it near standing water, flammable vapours or combustible materials.

Disconnect the electrical supply before:

  • Cleaning the sealing area
  • Replacing consumable parts
  • Inspecting the heating element
  • Removing trapped material
  • Carrying out maintenance
  • Moving the machine

Never modify the electrical components or bypass safety features. If the cable, plug, casing or operating mechanism becomes damaged, stop using the machine and arrange inspection by a suitably competent person.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning helps the machine produce more consistent seals. However, always disconnect it from the electrical supply and allow it to cool before beginning.

Remove loose film and contamination using a suitable non-abrasive method. Do not use a metal blade against the sealing surface because it could damage the protective covering or element.

Inspect the machine regularly for:

  • Worn heating elements
  • Damaged protective sealing covers
  • Loose or displaced components
  • Film residue
  • Frayed electrical cables
  • Plug damage
  • Uneven arm movement
  • Inconsistent seals

Heating elements and protective covers are consumable components. Their service life will depend on the timer setting, material thickness, operating frequency and maintenance.

Use compatible replacement parts and follow the applicable instructions when fitting them.

Important Limitations

The Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 closes compatible packaging but does not automatically confirm the suitability of the completed pack.

Do not assume that a finished seal is:

  • Airtight
  • Watertight
  • Leakproof
  • Tamper evident
  • Sterile
  • Food-contact approved
  • Suitable for medical products
  • Suitable for hazardous substances
  • Suitable for vacuum packing
  • Validated for controlled environments
  • Approved for every transport method

The machine also does not include an integrated cutter. Therefore, users working with continuous layflat tubing need a separate appropriate cutting method.

Always assess and test the complete packaging system before commercial use.

Storing the Impulse Heat Sealer IS400

Disconnect the machine and allow it to cool completely before storage.

Keep it in a clean, dry area away from moisture, dust, direct heat and accidental impact. Avoid placing heavy items on the sealing arm, cable or electrical components.

Store replacement elements and protective covers in suitable packaging so they remain clean and undamaged.

Before returning the machine to service, inspect it for damage and confirm that all parts remain correctly fitted.

Food Safety Information

The heat sealer itself does not make packaging suitable for food contact.

When packing food, use bags or tubing supported by appropriate food-contact compliance documentation. In addition, consider the type of food, storage temperature, contact duration and intended market.

Keep the machine and sealing area clean to reduce the risk of contamination. However, do not assume that the sealing process sterilises the packaging or its contents.

Businesses remain responsible for assessing the finished pack and following applicable food-safety procedures.

PPWR Compliance Information

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2025/40, establishes requirements for packaging placed on the EU market. Further information appears in the European Commission’s packaging guidance.

The Impulse Heat Sealer IS400 is packaging equipment rather than packaging material. However, businesses using it to prepare packaging for the EU market should assess the complete packaging format, including the bags, tubing, labels and other components.

This description does not constitute a declaration of PPWR compliance. Please contact us if you require available product information for a particular application.

Material Testing

Sealing performance varies between different bags and films. Therefore, testing the intended packaging material provides the best way to assess compatibility.

Where practical, send us a sample of your bag or layflat tubing so we can discuss its width, thickness and general suitability for this machine.

Please contact us before sending material:
