Weed Control Fabric 2m x 50m
Reduce unwanted plant growth across gardens and landscaped areas with this Weed Control Fabric. Supplied as one complete 2m x 50m roll, it provides approximately 100m² of coverage before you allow for overlaps and trimming.
The 100gsm material helps control weed growth while allowing air and liquids to pass through to the soil beneath. Consequently, it creates a practical barrier without completely sealing the ground.
You can install the fabric beneath mulch, bark, decorative gravel and other suitable landscaping materials. Alternatively, you can use it beneath garden decking without covering it with mulch.
The material also works as a stabilising geotextile. However, it does not provide the rapid porosity required for drainage applications. Therefore, you should not use it as a substitute for a specialist drainage membrane.

The coverage figure uses the complete roll dimensions. Therefore, allow additional material for overlaps, edges, obstacles, planting cuts and trimming when calculating how many rolls you require.
The approximate 10kg roll weight corresponds with 100m² of 100gsm material. However, nominal manufacturing tolerances may affect the precise finished weight and dimensions.
How Weed Control Fabric Works
Weed Control Fabric creates a physical barrier that restricts light from reaching the ground. As a result, it helps suppress many common weeds and reduces the amount of routine weeding required.
At the same time, the material allows air and liquids to pass through to the soil. Therefore, rainwater and suitable irrigation can still reach the ground beneath the membrane.
For the best results, prepare the site properly before installation and cover the material with a suitable mulch where required. Furthermore, prevent soil and organic debris from building up on top because weeds may establish within this upper layer.
The membrane helps control weed growth, but it cannot stop every weed in every condition. Couch grass, mare’s tail and certain bulbs may penetrate the material, especially if you stretch it tightly during installation.
Preparing the Ground for Weed Control Fabric
You do not normally need to remove every existing weed before installing the membrane. Instead, strim or cut the vegetation down to ground level.
However, remove hard, woody or fibrous stalks that could puncture the material. In addition, clear away sharp stones, metal, glass and other debris from the installation area.
Level the ground where necessary and fill deep holes that could leave the membrane unsupported. Then rake the surface to create a more even base.
Where aggressive or persistent weeds are present, consider removing as much of the root system as practical before laying the material. Although the membrane helps suppress growth, strong underground roots and shoots may still find weak points or planting openings.
Avoid using unsuitable chemicals unless they form part of an appropriate landscaping plan. One of the main benefits of the membrane is that it helps control weeds through a physical barrier.
How to Install Weed Control Fabric
Measure the area before unrolling the Weed Control Fabric. Next, calculate the number of strips required and include an allowance for overlaps and perimeter securing.
Place the material over the prepared ground without stretching it tightly. Allowing the fabric to follow the ground naturally helps reduce stress and limits the risk of weeds penetrating strained sections.
Where you need multiple strips, overlap the adjoining edges rather than placing them directly beside one another. Then secure the overlaps and perimeter so wind or subsequent landscaping work cannot move them apart.
You can secure the edges by trenching them into the ground or using suitable metal ground-membrane staples. Additionally, place staples around obstacles, overlaps and changes in direction where the material may lift.
Once secure, cover the membrane with the chosen mulch, bark or decorative landscaping material. Alternatively, continue with the planned decking installation if you intend to use the fabric beneath a raised structure.
Using Weed Control Fabric with Mulch
Covering Weed Control Fabric with a suitable mulch helps protect it from prolonged exposure and physical disturbance. Consequently, correct installation beneath mulch may extend its service life considerably.
Suitable coverings may include:
- Bark
- Wood chips
- Decorative gravel
- Stone chippings
- Other compatible landscaping materials
Spread the covering evenly and avoid dragging sharp materials across the exposed fabric. Furthermore, use enough mulch to hold the membrane securely and provide the intended finished appearance.
Over time, soil, leaves and organic matter may collect on top of the covering. Weeds can then root into this upper material even when the membrane continues to block growth from beneath. Therefore, remove accumulated debris and surface weeds as part of routine garden maintenance.
Weed Control Fabric Under Decking
You can install the membrane beneath garden decking without adding a mulch covering. It helps suppress weed growth in the difficult-to-access area below the deck while still allowing air and moisture to reach the ground.
Prepare and level the area before building the decking structure. Then secure the fabric carefully so construction work and wind do not move it out of position.
Cut neatly around posts or foundations and secure the resulting openings. Additionally, avoid leaving large exposed gaps where weeds could grow around structural supports.
Although you can use the material without mulch beneath decking, keep sharp building materials and fixings away from the membrane. Offcuts, screws and rough timber edges could puncture it during construction.
Securing the Membrane
Correctly securing the membrane helps maintain continuous ground coverage. Therefore, pay particular attention to the perimeter, overlaps, corners and planting openings.
You can trench the edges into the soil to help anchor the material. Alternatively, use compatible metal ground-membrane staples at suitable intervals.
Wind-exposed sites may require additional fixings. Similarly, sloping or uneven areas may need closer spacing to prevent movement.
Do not stretch the material tightly between fixings. Instead, allow it to sit naturally against the prepared surface so changes in temperature, ground movement or foot traffic place less strain on the fabric.
Planting Through Weed Control Fabric
Plan the planting positions before cutting the membrane. Then make the smallest practical opening required for each plant.
A cross-shaped cut can allow the material to open around the plant while limiting the amount of exposed soil. After planting, position the fabric closely around the stem without restricting growth.
Secure the opening where necessary and cover the surrounding membrane with mulch. However, keep mulch away from plant stems when appropriate for the selected species.
Large or poorly positioned openings can give weeds access to light and space. Therefore, measure carefully and avoid cutting until you have confirmed the planting layout.
Weed Control Fabric Lifespan
When used without mulch, the membrane can provide an expected service life of approximately 7-9 years under suitable conditions.
When correctly installed beneath an appropriate mulch, it may last up to 40 years. However, this figure represents a potential service life rather than a guarantee.
Actual longevity depends on factors including:
- Ground preparation
- Installation quality
- Exposure to sunlight
- Type and depth of covering
- Foot traffic
- Sharp objects
- Movement of gravel or mulch
- Weed species
- Maintenance
- Accidental damage
Regularly inspect visible edges and exposed areas. Additionally, replace or repair damaged sections before weeds establish through the opening.
Important Limitations
This product allows air and liquids to pass through, but its porosity is not fast enough for drainage applications. Therefore, do not use it as a replacement for specialist drainage geotextiles or drainage membranes.
Certain persistent weeds, including couch grass, mare’s tail and some bulbs, may penetrate the material. The risk can increase when you stretch the fabric during installation or leave poorly secured gaps.
The membrane suppresses weeds growing from beneath, but weeds may still grow in soil or organic matter that collects on top. Consequently, the landscaped area will still require occasional maintenance.
For demanding commercial, structural or drainage projects, confirm that the material meets the required technical specification before installation.
Cutting and Handling Weed Control Fabric
Measure each section carefully before cutting the Weed Control Fabric. Then use suitable sharp tools on a safe cutting surface.
Allow enough material for overlaps and secured edges. Furthermore, make additional allowances around posts, trees, edging and other obstacles.
Avoid unnecessarily dragging the roll across rough or sharp ground. Although the material suits general landscaping, careless handling can damage it before installation.
The complete roll weighs approximately 10kg – 22.05lb. Therefore, use an appropriate handling method and ask for assistance where necessary.
Storing the Roll
Store unused material in a clean, dry place away from sharp objects and direct heat. Additionally, retain the packaging where practical to help protect the roll before use.
Keep the roll supported so rough floors or protruding objects do not damage its edges. Before installation, inspect the material and cut away any damaged sections where necessary.
Return offcuts to a clean storage area because they may prove useful for small borders, repairs or additional landscaping work.
