Medium Duty Clear Lay Flat Tubing – 200 Gauge (50 Micron)
Our medium duty lay flat tubing provides a versatile way to produce clear polythene bags in the exact lengths your products require. The continuous tubular film comes on a roll, allowing you to create bags for short, long or irregularly shaped items.
The 200 gauge material measures approximately 50 microns thick and contains 30% recycled material. It offers a practical balance of durability, flexibility and clarity for everyday commercial and industrial packaging. The clear finish keeps products, labels and barcodes visible while helping protect the contents from dust, dirt and moisture.
Unlike ready-made polythene bags, lay flat tubing does not restrict you to predetermined bag lengths. Choose the correct tubing width, pull the required amount from the roll and cut it to suit the product. You can then close one or both ends using a compatible heat sealer, tape, ties or staples.
This flexibility makes 200 gauge polythene tubing ideal for manufacturers, retailers, distributors, workshops, warehouses and fulfilment centres that regularly package products of different lengths.
Create Custom Length Polythene Bags
Lay flat tubing allows you to create made-to-measure bags without ordering multiple fixed dimensions. Each roll contains a continuous clear polythene tube with open ends.
To make an individual bag, cut a section slightly longer than the product. Seal one end, insert the item and close the remaining end. Alternatively, leave one end open if the product only requires a protective sleeve or temporary covering.
This system works particularly well when products share a similar width but vary in length. For example, one roll can produce short bags for small components, medium-length bags for spare parts and much longer bags for rods, profiles, textiles or bundled products.
Using only the required length can reduce unnecessary material around smaller products. It also helps businesses avoid storing a large selection of ready-made bag lengths.
How to Use Medium Duty Clear 200 Gauge Lay Flat Tubing
For the best results:
- Measure the widest and deepest parts of the product.
- Select a tubing width that provides enough room for the product to slide inside.
- Pull the required length of tubing from the roll.
- Allow additional material for the end seals or closures.
- Cut straight across the tubing using suitable scissors or a safety cutter.
- Seal one end before inserting the product.
- Place the product inside without stretching the polythene excessively.
- Close the remaining end using a heat sealer, tape, tie or another suitable method.
- Check both closures before storing or transporting the package.
When producing several bags of the same length, create a cutting guide or measured work area. This can improve consistency and speed up the packing process.
How to Measure Medium Duty Clear Lay Flat Tubing
We state lay flat tubing dimensions as:
Width of tubing in millimetres × length of roll in metres
The width refers to the distance across the flattened tube from one folded edge to the other. It does not represent the tube’s circumference or diameter.
Flat Products
For flat products, select a tubing width slightly larger than the widest part of the item. Allow extra clearance so the product slides inside easily without stretching the film.
Rectangular or Box-Shaped Products
For products with noticeable depth, add the product width and depth together to estimate the minimum lay flat tubing width:
Required lay flat width = product width + product depth
Always add extra clearance for easy insertion, manufacturing tolerances and the thickness of the product.
Round Products
For circular products, calculate approximately half of the item’s circumference. You can estimate the minimum lay flat width using:
Required lay flat width = diameter × 1.57
The formula works with either millimetres or inches. If you enter the diameter in millimetres, the resulting lay flat width will be in millimetres. If you enter it in inches, the result will be in inches.
Always add approximately 5–10% clearance so the product slides into the tubing without stretching it.
Allowance for Sealing Medium Duty Clear Lay flat tubing
Remember to add extra length for both end seals. The exact allowance will depend on your sealing equipment and preferred closure method.
If you are unsure which width to choose, test a sample with the intended product before ordering a full roll.
Available Widths and Roll Lengths
Our 200 gauge lay flat tubing range includes widths for everything from narrow components to large commercial products.
The roll length varies according to the tubing width:
- 25mm (1 inch) wide – 600mm (24 inches) wide – generally supplied on 420-metre rolls
- 750mm (30 inches) wide – supplied on a 350-metre roll
- 900mm (36 inches) wide – supplied on a 290-metre roll
Imperial measurements provide a useful approximate reference. However, use the stated millimetre width when selecting and ordering your tubing because this represents the actual product dimension.
Always check the individual product option before ordering, as the roll length forms part of the full product specification.
Medium Duty Clear 200 Gauge Polythene Construction
At approximately 50 microns thick, 200 gauge lay flat tubing provides medium duty protection for everyday packaging applications. It offers more substance than lightweight film while remaining flexible enough to wrap around a wide variety of products.
The transparent material keeps the contents visible, helping warehouse and production teams identify products without opening the package. Labels, product codes and enclosed documents can also remain visible through the film.
For lightweight and medium-weight products with smooth surfaces, 200 gauge tubing provides an economical and versatile packaging choice. Products with considerable weight, rough surfaces or sharp edges may require thicker 500 gauge lay flat tubing or additional protective wrapping.
Made with 30% Recycled Material
Every roll within our 200 gauge lay flat tubing range contains 30% recycled material. This reduces the amount of virgin plastic required while retaining the flexibility, clarity and practical performance needed for everyday commercial packaging.
Using recycled-content lay flat tubing allows businesses to choose a more responsible packaging option without losing the convenience of creating different bag lengths from one continuous roll.
The made-to-measure format can also help reduce unnecessary material use. Instead of placing small products into oversized ready-made bags, users can select a more suitable tubing width and prepare only the length required.
Sealing Medium Duty Clear Lay Flat Tubing
Heat Sealing Medium Duty Clear Lay Flat Tubing
Heat sealing provides the neatest and most secure closure for most applications. A compatible impulse heat sealer melts the two inner surfaces together, creating a closed end.
Test the heat and sealing time before starting a full production run. Excessive heat may distort or cut through the film, while insufficient heat may produce a weak seal.
Tape For Medium Duty Lay Flat
Packaging tape provides a quick closure for temporary protection and low-demand applications. Fold the open end before applying the tape to improve the closure.
Ties For Medium Duty Lay Flat
Cable ties, twist ties or bag ties provide a convenient option when users may need to reopen the package. Gather the tubing carefully before securing the tie.
Stapling Medium Duty Lay Flat
Staples can provide a fast mechanical closure for suitable non-food applications. However, staples puncture the film and leave small openings. They may also create sharp points, so they will not suit every product or workplace.
Heat sealing closes the tubing but does not shrink it around the product. Lay flat tubing is not heat-shrink film unless the product specification explicitly states otherwise.
Why Choose Our Medium Duty Clear 200 Gauge Lay Flat Tubing?
Our medium duty lay flat tubing gives businesses greater control over bag length. Instead of stocking numerous ready-made bag sizes, you can create packaging that closely matches each product.
The 50 micron film provides a useful balance of durability and flexibility for everyday warehouse, retail, manufacturing and distribution requirements. Its clear finish also makes product identification quick and straightforward.
Each roll contains 30% recycled material, helping reduce reliance on virgin plastic while maintaining the performance required for day-to-day packaging.
A single roll can produce many different bag lengths, making the tubing particularly useful for companies with changing product ranges or irregular packaging requirements.
The extensive selection of widths allows businesses to package anything from narrow components to larger commercial items. For heavier, rougher or more demanding products, our 500 gauge lay flat tubing provides a thicker alternative.
What Is Medium Duty Clear Lay Flat Tubing Also Known As?
Suppliers and customers use several names for lay flat tubing. Common alternatives and search terms include:
- Layflat tubing
- Lay flat polythene tubing
- Polythene tubing
- Polyethylene tubing
- Poly tubing
- LDPE tubing
- Clear plastic tubing
- Continuous polythene tubing
- Polythene tubing on a roll
- Plastic tubing roll
- Bag-making tubing
- Custom-length bag tubing
- Heat-seal tubing
- Polythene sleeve tubing
- Clear packaging tubing
- Industrial polythene tubing
- Continuous bagging film
- Made-to-measure bag tubing
- Recycled-content polythene tubing
- 30% recycled lay flat tubing
These terms generally describe a continuous flattened tube of flexible polythene that users prepare to their preferred length. The tubing allows businesses to create individual bags, sleeves and protective covers.
Lay flat tubing differs from open-ended polythene bags because it does not have a pre-formed bottom seal. It also differs from shrink film because ordinary lay flat tubing does not contract tightly around a product when heated.
Whether customers call it layflat tubing, polythene tubing, poly tubing or bag-making film, it provides a flexible solution for products that do not fit standard bag dimensions.
Efficient Packaging for Variable Product Lengths
Lay flat tubing works particularly well when a business packages products with a consistent width but several different lengths. One tubing width can produce multiple bag sizes, reducing the number of separate packaging products kept in stock.
For example, manufacturers can prepare short sections for components and longer sections for assembled products. Warehouses can also prepare bags as required rather than predicting every possible finished length in advance.
This flexibility can reduce excess material, simplify stock management and help packing teams respond quickly to changing requirements.
Important Usage Information
Although 200 gauge tubing provides dependable medium duty protection, sharp or abrasive products may still puncture the film. Cover sharp edges or use protective wrapping before inserting these items.
Do not stretch the tubing tightly around bulky products. Excessive pressure can weaken the side folds, end closures or heat seals.
The tubing helps protect contents from everyday dust, dirt and moisture. However, do not treat the finished package as completely waterproof, airtight, leakproof or tamper-evident unless you use an appropriate sealing process and verify the result.
Always test the chosen tubing width, cut length and closure method with the intended product before beginning a larger packing run.
PPWR Compliance Information
Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on Packaging and Packaging Waste, commonly known as the PPWR, applies to polythene and polypropylene packaging placed on the EU market. Material specifications and supporting product documentation are available for our polythene and polypropylene products to help customers complete their compliance assessments. However, material type, recycled content or food-contact suitability alone does not confirm full PPWR compliance. The responsible economic operator must assess the finished packaging and its intended use against all applicable requirements, including packaging minimisation, substances of concern, recyclability, recycled content, labelling and technical documentation. Customers intending to place these products on the EU market should email sales@expresspackaging.co.uk to request the latest available documentation and confirm suitability for their application before making a PPWR compliance claim.
Food Safety and Material Certification
Suitability for direct food contact may vary by product specification or production batch. If you require 200 gauge lay flat tubing for food packaging, please contact our sales team at sales@expresspackaging.co.uk before ordering.
We will confirm whether your selected tubing width meets your requirements and provide a Food Safety Certificate where available.
All rolls contain 30% recycled material. If you require written confirmation of the recycled content or another material specification, please request the relevant documentation before placing your order.
Storage Recommendations
Store lay flat tubing in a clean, dry location away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and sharp objects. Keep the roll in its original protective packaging until required.
